The first of October will always be a special day in Arsenal history. On this day in 2000, striker Thierry Henry scored a goal for the ages against Manchester United at Highbury with many still saying it was his greatest ever for the North London club.
Arsenal fans have been celebrating that goal on Twitter 18 years later, as they remember this memorable piece of history.
The match was poised to be a big one and the Frenchman’s strike proved to be the deciding one as Arsène Wenger’s men enabled punters to cash in on some of the best bonuses for betting by claiming a 1-0 win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s charges.
Henry received the ball just outside the United box with his back towards goal. With one touch he flicked the ball up in air, turned and hit a dipping volley. The ball travelled past goalkeeper Fabian Barthez into the top right corner in front of the ground’s famous Clock End.
United would go on to win the Premier League that season with the Gunners ending as runners-up.
