Daniel Levy has enquired about the possibility of Tottenham Hotspur signing Gareth Bale, per El Chiringuito TV.
What’s the word?
The report, cited by AS, claims that Levy and Madrid president Florentino Perez had a meeting in which Bale’s name was mentioned. Of course, the Welshman left Spurs to move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2013 in an £85m deal.
While it is not known if any possible move would take place in the summer or in January, the Wales international has struggled for proper minutes this season due to a variety of injury problems.
Indeed, he has made 14 appearances in all competitions, making nine starts in La Liga, and has scored two goals.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Got to give up
Spurs need to nip this in the bud.
Bale signed a new contract in 2016 and, per The Guardian, became the best-paid player in the world.
He currently earns over £600,000-per-week before tax and £350,000-per-week after tax. When the deal was signed, he was earning more than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Spurs, by comparison, pay Harry Kane, their highest-earning player, £200,000-per-week, per Spotrac.
They would have to smash through their current wage structure to do a deal for Bale, a player who turns 31 later this year, and who has struggled with injuries throughout his spell in Spain.
In total, he has missed 396 days due to a variety of problems, equating to 81 games.
Add his injury problems and his wages together, plus the likely transfer fee, and one gets a clear picture of just how nonsensical the possibility of a reunion with Bale truly is for Spurs.
Meanwhile, Spurs fans have debated the prospect of signing a global superstar!
